an eclectic mix of modern and traditional on hawthorn

in this architecturally traditional home, we wanted to create an eclectic mix of modern and antique furnishings to give the interior dimension, texture and personality. the color palette for the finishes is a range of whites, soft grays and warm woods, punctuated with hits of black. we brought in lots of color through the artwork, photographs, plants and textiles.

the exterior of the house.

a classic, shaded front porch with adirondack chairs fitted with striped black and white cushions.

the entry has a traditional, graphic tiled floor, wainscoting and light gray walls that continue throughout the house.

the stairwell is finished simply in white, gray, black and wood.

a bright blue and green abstract by sarah kinn grounds the living room.

mid century pieces (coffee table and leather bench) are mixed in with the linen, rolled-arm sofas. the blue toned area rug has large, organic shapes.

the dining room hosts a series of ocean photographs taken by the family’s grandmother that frame the pared-down, mid century table and white, bent wood dining chairs.

the shiny, chrome bertoia bar stools and uncomplicated, clear glass island pendants are unexpected, yet fitting additions to the traditional kitchen, creating a juxtaposition of styles and  giving the kitchen more interest.

the clean silhouettes of the circular, upholstered swivel chairs and round, white saarinen tulip table stand out against the honey-colored, wood paneling of the library.

on the landing, an antique chest inherited from beloved grandparents is accessorized with circular, white table lamps and whimsical jonathan adler ceramic birds. the wood-framed, rococo side chair has been reupholstered in a fabric with a fun, mod pattern and placed with another saarinen tulip table.

the bedroom of the middle school son is a study in blues and steel: striped flor carpet tiles, denim bean bags and bedding with a charcoal steel bunk bed and steel framed dresser.

the colorful sarah kinn abstract in the guest room sets the palette of neutrals and rose tones. the macrame hanging, felted ottomans and basket and knobby wool rug give the room texture.

we limited the color in the master bedroom to keep the space tranquil and calm. streamlined pieces like the lounge chair and ottoman, side table, lamps and sheepskin covered bench are mixed in with the traditional upholstered bed and nightstands.

a rounded daybed is tucked under a window and layered with soft, patterned pillows.

a blu dot lounge chair, ottoman and side table create and peaceful reading nook in the corner of the bedroom.

a simple table lamp is paired with an upholstered bed with traditional details.

the outdoor furniture features gray cording, weathered, wood framing and tweedy gray upholstery, accented with bright, geometric pillows.

the sofa cushions offer pops of color.
