the summer before my lucy started middle school she wanted to buy new school clothes. in the past, i typically just dipped into the girls’ section on a target run and picked up dresses and leggings and tees in bright colors that featured unicorns, rainbows, hearts and glitter. i loved selecting happy outfits for her and she was always delighted with what i brought home. this time, however, she wanted to come along and weigh in on everything. at first i thought it might be fun.

it was so exciting to be included in this article by stacey lindsay for camillestyles.com about color trends for 2022. i chose terracotta. sam, one of my SUPER talented classmates from my studies at denver’s heritage school of interior design, employed this color so effectively and beautifully in her work that i fell in love with it too. and with all that we’ve been through already in 2022 - fires, shootings, blizzards, omicron - i think the warmth and earthiness of terracotta will do us all some good. even after eleven years in boulder, i am always caught off guard by the weather. this year we had a stunning, temperate fall with outrageous rainbow colored trees and then POOF - the wind rolled through, the leaves fell down and we got this freezing sleet/rain/snow with temps in the low thirties. my body just could not process the drastic change (hank’s didn’t have to as he simply refused to go outside) and i was FREEZING, despite my hat, scarf and jacket.

PRAISE JESUS! my vacuum and i are reunited. it was a TOUGH separation but now we have an even greater appreciation for each other. THANK YOU to all the lovely friends who offered to lend me yours. and a bonus… lucy showed me a new anime filter that allows you to smile. i do love the original one but you always look a bit glum with it and that is NOT how i’m feeling now… just beside myself with excitement! x0x0x
in this architecturally traditional home, we wanted to create an eclectic mix of modern and antique furnishings to give the interior dimension, texture and personality. the color palette for the finishes is a range of whites and soft grays and warm woods, punctuated with hits of black. we brought in lots of color through the artwork, photograph and textiles.

2020 was a bananas year that i think we are all still recovering from… my business came to a standstill last spring and it really made me question whether this was a sustainable line of work for me. thankfully, everything has picked back up again (i think a lot of people began to re-evaluate their homes after being stuck in them for months on end!) and i am finally feeling super optimistic about what’s down the road. so i am especially GRATEFUL for this year’s “best of houzz service" award (considering i wasn’t performing nearly as much service as in a typical year) and all of my wonderful clients and colleagues who make this adventure possible! the best way i can describe the last three months is humbling… because i’d had such a slow spring work-wise, due to the pandemic, i decided to enroll in a few classes (three!) to bump up and fill in holes in my design knowledge. two of the courses were technical and between them i learned the adobe suite (illustrator, in design, photoshop), sketch up and autocad. i cannot emphasize enough how far out of my wheelhouse these programs are… i am probably the last person on the planet who still uses a paper agenda to keep track of my schedule and when we have daylight savings my car clock is an hour off for six months because i have no idea how to change it. a few times i have given my first husband a ride when the clock was wrong and he has modified it, which causes me to show up either an hour early or an hour late to places because i have taught myself to adjust for it.

as we all struggle through this crazy global pandemic, we are missing the ability to travel and experience the customs and traditions of other cultures. i had so much fun writing this article for boulder county home+ garden about dutch “gezellig” (coziness) and remembering our time living as ex-pats in amsterdam. all three of my sweeties made it into this piece (hank and my darling children) as well as my living room!
